Frequently Asked Questions

Is the initial call free? +

Yes, the initial call is free of charge. It lasts about 30 minutes. The goal is to get to know each other, answer all your questions and see if it's a good match!

What does the onboarding process look like? +

Onboarding includes 2 meetings: Meeting #1 (in-person or virtual) to review your detailed financial profile, go over your goals, and determine which accounts we will manage. Meeting #2 (in-person or virtual) to play with scenarios, identify areas of potential risk, and prioritize your next 1-2 steps. Between meetings, you complete questionnaires and work with online planning tools.

How often do you meet with your clients? +

After onboarding, we generally meet with clients at least 1-2 times a year. As you get closer to your planned departure, we will meet more frequently. We can accomplish a lot outside of meetings via email, videos, and document sharing.

Do you meet in person or online? +

It's up to you! It depends on where you are and whether you want to make the trek to downtown Vancouver, WA. They like virtual meetings as much as you do.

Why do you manage my money? +

Investing is just a part of your financial plan, but it is an important one. They want the plan to be implemented and provide benefits including coordination across accounts, tax-loss harvesting, intentional capital gains generation, asset location, tax-smart transaction management, methodical rebalancing, and ongoing fund monitoring.

Where are my accounts held? +

The accounts they manage are held at Charles Schwab. They remain in the client's name.

Why do you recommend starting planning 2 to 5 years ahead? +

Building a savvy, strategic savings plan takes time. It involves layering in the timing of employee benefits, understanding tax impacts of changing income, coming up with a withdrawal strategy, and gathering financial documents. It also allows for building a financial buffer for a soft landing upon return and having quality conversations with a spouse or travel partner.

What is the pricing structure? +

Fees are charged as a percentage of assets under management: 1.00% on the first $1,000,000, 0.75% on the next $1,000,000–$3,000,000, 0.65% on the next $3,000,000–$5,000,000, and 0.50% on amounts above $5,000,000. There is also a one-time upfront planning fee of $7,500 for onboarding, data gathering, and setting the basis for the financial and investment plan. A minimum of $500,000 in investable assets is required.
