Frequently Asked Questions

How are you compensated and when do you get paid? +

We are a fee-only advisor firm with quarterly billing in arrears, calculated as a percentage of overall managed assets. Fees are typically deducted directly from investment accounts. We submit a copy of the bill each quarter, and clients also receive separate monthly statements from their independent asset custodian.

What is a fiduciary? +

We are fiduciary financial advisors legally obligated to act in the best interest of our clients under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, enforced by the U.S. SEC. This means we must prioritize clients' financial well-being, act transparently, avoid conflicts of interest, and provide personalized advice.

How does FVIM differ from brokerage firms, trust companies, banks and other wealth management firms? +

We are fee-only with no commissions or transaction fees from outside sources. Our revenue comes entirely from client fees calculated as a percentage of assets managed, aligning our interests with clients'. Unlike non-RIA firms, we owe a fiduciary duty to always serve clients' highest interests first.

Do you work with my current advisors (attorneys, CPAs and other professionals)? +

Yes, we are pleased to work with your existing advisors to ensure we are collectively addressing your interrelated goals and circumstances. We proactively build strong relationships with each of your advisors to pool collective expertise.

How often do you review my investments? +

We run a transaction ledger each business day to monitor cash flows and review portfolios at least annually for cash-flow, rebalancing, or other ongoing management needs.

How often will you communicate with me? +

We send quarterly reports tracking investment performance and include a letter summarizing timely topics. We prefer in-person meetings at least annually but can supplement with phone calls or emails as appropriate.

What if I move out of the area? +

Many of our clients live outside the Pacific Northwest. We are experienced at serving long-distance clients by substituting in-person meetings with email, web services like Go-To-Meeting, and telephone calls.

Where are your clients located? +

We have clients based in Washington, Oregon, California, and many other states around the country.
